Frequently Asked Questions
Why see a mental health social worker over a psychologist?
If you’ve had a bad experience in therapy before, working with a Mental Health Social Worker can offer something different. Unlike psychologists, I focus not only on mental health symptoms but also on your life context—relationships, trauma, culture, and practical daily stressors.
Mental Health Social Workers can also service Mental Health Care Plans from GPs. Please see the FEE page for rebate information.
What if I haven’t had a good experience with therapy before?
I specialise in working with people who’ve felt misunderstood or dismissed in previous therapy, offering a space that’s warm, validating, and focused on rebuilding trust and safety at your pace.
My approach is deeply person-centred and grounded in practical, evidence-based support like CBT, EMDR, and motivational interviewing.
Preparing for your first session
It is very normal to feel uncomfortable or nervous before your first session. We aim to provide warm, non-judgmental care, and will do our best to help you feel at ease.
The first session generally involves a detailed assessment of your current life situation, your difficulties and any contributing factors and history. You can ask us any questions that you may have and, if time permits, we will discuss with you a plan for your therapy. This is called an Initial Assessment.
Length of Therapy
Most people feel the benefits of treatment after a few sessions. However, the total number of sessions required depends on several factors. Research indicates that clients typically require between 5 and 15 sessions.
After the assessment, you will work with your therapist to determine the best number and frequency of sessions to suit your goals, schedule, and financial situation. Sessions usually begin on a once weekly or fortnightly basis and are spaced out more as you begin to feel better.
We do offer longer-term therapy/mentoring if that is appropriate for you. Some clients love having a regular well-being check-in, and we are happy to provide that service.
The Meaning of Indus
Our name is a nod to the Indus Valley — one of the oldest civilisations, rooted in mindfulness, language, and learning. We honour these origins by making therapy modern, accessible, and grounded in real science and culture.
