Whether you’re seeking guidance for anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or any other issue, our therapists are here to help at The Local Doctor Ivanhoe. Just browse through our extensive list of services and find the right one for you.

Depression

You may be feeling helpless and hopeless. You may also feel overwhelmed by negative thoughts and feelings, a decreased appetite or energy, difficulty concentrating or staying motivated, sleep problems, and changes in mood or behaviour. In some cases, people with the major depressive disorder may have suicidal thoughts. It can be helpful to seek support from a mental health professional such as a counsellor or therapist.

Anxiety

You might be dealing with anxiety if you’re experiencing various emotions like fear, stress, and dread, coupled with physical sensations such as rapid heart rate or restlessness. Everything might feel like one big emergency that can’t be resolved quickly enough, and concentrating or making decisions can be challenging. It’s crucial to seek anxiety counselling to learn how to manage these symptoms and regain control of your life. A qualified therapist can help you develop coping strategies and techniques that will allow you to manage anxiety better and overcome the challenges it presents.

You experience a feeling of dread or terror when faced with the COVID mandate, ranging from ethical discomfort to complete panic attacks that make it difficult to function normally. You might also be facing anxiety around returning onsite, driving, or being apprehensive towards your employer or the mandate in general. You may have been forced to get vaccinated against your will and might be feeling negative emotions towards your own actions.

COVID induced Isolation

If you are experiencing isolation, you may feel disconnected from the people you love. You might also find it difficult to concentrate or focus on anything else other than your worries and concerns. You may also feel anxious, angry, or frustrated because you cannot express these emotions freely.

Addiction

This typically starts with using alcohol or drugs to escape from negative emotions or stressed circumstances until you become reliant on the substance to feel normal and happy. It can result in significant damage both physically and mentally, including disorders such as anxiety disorder; co-occurring psychiatric conditions, addictions to multiple substances (having to take both uppers and downers), cognitive impairments, relationship problems including marital infidelity and impaired problem-solving skills.

Anger Management

Our service is aimed at helping people to become aware of your anger triggers, learn to manage your anger in healthier ways, and teach you how to be assertive in life. We help you make sure that you don’t get carried away by your emotions and make the right decisions.

Regular Mental Health Check-ins

Regular therapy allows you to grow and flourish even after you have pulled yourself out of a crisis. You may have just conquered your drug addiction or your phobia of leaving the home, and we can help you continue the work on yourself. We can help you maintain sobriety, manage relapses, maintain progress and even continue to address the root of the issue which led you to your original problem in the first place. We love brief and solution-focused therapy, but if you need a long-term therapeutic relationship to help you be the best you can be, we are here to help.

Childhood Trauma/Grief and Loss/PTSD

Experiences of physical, emotion, sexual and financial abuse can later manifest with symptoms like anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem, and unhelpful patterns in interpersonal relationships. Our goal is to assist you in achieving your full potential by developing better coping mechanisms to maintain a balanced and productive life.

Career and Assertiveness Coaching

We can help you express yourself and make your needs, wants, and feelings known without feeling guilty or apologetic. It can also give you a way to stand up to bullying and abuse by drawing on new strategies, behaviours, and beliefs.

Couples Therapy

Couple Counselling can help you and your partner understand the reasons behind their unhelpful behaviour patterns and develop new ways of being together. We can help you work through your problems, identify how your conflict affects one another, and how you can resolve these issues with respect and compassion. Relationships are like a dance, if you always stepping on your partner’s shoes, they will eventually start stepping on yours! Let us help you move together, in harmony.

Pain & Illness

If you are facing an illness or pain that is impacting your life, it can be overwhelming. We are committed to helping you overcome pain and illness-related issues by providing you with hope, courage, and strength to find your way back to a full life.

Relationships

Relationships can be the most important part of our lives, yet they are also the most complex. They can seem like a never-ending struggle between yourself and your partner, friends or family. The strain on all parties can begin to affect every aspect of your life, including your health and well-being. Counselling is a time for you to “talk things through” with an unbiased professional who can help guide you through your specific relationship issues.

Self-Esteem and Fulfilment

Are you feeling low in confidence, with no sense of purpose, or acutely aware that life is slipping by? Do you have a deep-seated fear of rejection, a tendency to go on the defensive whenever you hear someone disagreeing with you? This may be the wake-up call you need. With our guidance and support, we will work with you to help identify what will make your life feel more fulfilled.

We will help you identify the source of imbalance between work and life, along with understanding internal and external aspects that affect your relationships and performance in work, or other personal goals. More often than not, poor work-life balance has deeper roots, which we can help you find.

Perinatal Pregnancy Counselling

We offer a safe and confidential space where you can share your experiences and concerns and receive the care and understanding you need to make the best decision for yourself and the pregnancy. Whether you’re dealing with uncertainty around the future with your partner, unsure about your ability to deal with the demands of the child or any other perinatal-related issues, we can provide the unbiased support you need. This is also a Medicare rebated item, with up to 3 sessions per pregnancy (current or in the last 12 months).

Pregnancy Support Counselling

Are You looking for pregnancy support counsellor? Are you struggling with the physical and emotional changes that come with being pregnant? Do you feel isolated and alone? From the moment you contact us, we will work to provide you with the support and resources you need to cope with this incredible time in your life.

Mental Health Services Ivanhoe

How We Can Help

Mental health problems are serious and can impact your life in several ways. If you’re not properly coping with these challenges head-on, they can lead to more serious symptoms. These methods are designed to help at-risk individuals by providing relief from symptoms and improving their quality of life. These can help you process emotions more effectively and understand why you are feeling the way you are. They can also provide you with strategies for managing or resolving problematic behaviours or thoughts.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

The primary goal of CBT is to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms by altering negative thoughts about oneself or one’s environment. This can be done through sessions that focus on changing problematic thought patterns into positive or neutral ones, increasing exposure to situations or environments that are benign or pleasant, teaching relaxation techniques, and employing concrete strategies for dealing with anxieties or triggers.

Motivational Interviewing

This helps identify areas where improvement can be made and provides consistent encouragement for growth. This method is useful for several issues such as substance abuse recovery, personal development goals such as weight loss or quitting smoking, productivity enhancement at work etc.

Solution-Focused and Brief Therapy

This approach focuses on helping you find solutions to the problems that are causing you distress — this method tends not only to treat symptoms but also to address root causes. This will help you identify and correct thoughts, emotions, actions, and outcomes to improve your life.

Culturally Sensitive Practice

This approach is beneficial because it helps to connect patients with their cultural roots and allows them to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. It also fosters empathy for people from different cultures, which can help reduce stress and promote healing.

Strength-Based Approach

This emphasises strengths rather than deficits to help you resolve your problems. This approach empowers you as an individual by teaching you how to identify and use your personal resources to solve challenges. By doing so, they can overcome many obstacles, whether large or small.

Person-Centred Therapy

This is a modality that centres on the individual and their unique experiences. It seeks to understand the whole person, including their context, life experiences, unique thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. This knowledge is used to develop interventions that are tailored specifically to the needs of each .

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

The key aspects of ACT include acceptance is the belief that your problematic thoughts or feelings are part of who you are rather than something you should change. Commitment and a steadfast effort to follow through with positive actions based on those thoughts or feelings can help you overcome your issues.

Attachment-Based Therapy

This helps individuals heal from the trauma and losses experienced during their developmental years. It focuses on restoring healthy, secure attachments between infants and caregivers to prevent further emotional suffering in relationships with people you care about.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

This uses personal experiences to help clients work through difficult problems and focus on understanding relationships. This allows for more self-awareness and increased awareness of others’ feelings, leading to improved communication skills.

Narrative Therapy

This focuses on the therapist’s role as a storyteller. Rather than offering scripted solutions, therapists allows you to tell your story in your own words and then help you understand and process those stories.

Positive Psychology

The goal of all these interventions is to help you learn how to regulate your emotions to support healthy behaviour instead of struggling against it. By changing negative thought patterns into more empowering beliefs, you can gradually develop increased resilience towards challenging situations and improved well-being.
